• What is floating car data used for?

    Vehicles equipped with GPS-devices collect information about their position, their route and travel speed everywhere in the road network. This method of data collection is referred to as floating car data (FCD) and can be used to derive historical speed data or even for real-time applications. Floating car data based on GPS-trajectories open up many possibilities in traffic modelling and analysis and provide valuable information to traffic planners and decision makers. For example, floating car data enables traffic planners to analyse capacity bottlenecks in road networks: Hot spots, where congestions occur regularly, can be identified and targeted measures to mitigate congestions initiated.

    Analyse your study area and individually request the historical speeds on link level for every selected time period – summer vs. winter, last year vs. this year or even last Monday vs. this Monday. You can request average results of every week day and time of day – just chose your time resolution individually (e.g. 1-minute-interval or hourly data). We provide data tailored to your needs and formatted for direct import into PTV Visum and PTV Vissim. Therefore, you can start working with the data right away.
