Key Highlights of PTV Visum 2024

Super-easy integration of new data in your model • Start the move to ABM now

Built-in calculations for ABM models

We’ve made it much easier to set up ABM models, that are popular in microscopic demand modeling. Previously, ABM calculations could be done externally by ActivitySim or custom scripts. PTV Visum 2024 now adds an extensive set of built-in procedures for running and calculating ABM models. PTV Visum's ABM model provides stable results, and makes it easier to identify effects of measures without random distractions. Trips from all types of ABM can now be exported and visualized as animated trajectories in Visum Publisher.

Merging of network data

With Multimodal Transportation models relying on many data sources, merging, and integrating data from separate databases is essential for network building and maintenance workflows. PTV Visum 2024 introduces a new tool that simplifies this process. It enables transferring data between networks, aggregating attribute values, splitting links based on attribute changes, and creating new links to fill network gaps. For example, it facilitates incorporating cycling routes from a GIS into a transportation planning model, streamlining network integration tasks.

Import elevation data

When modeling active modes, electric vehicles, or emissions, topography is crucial for route choice and energy consumption. Common network datasets often lack detailed coverage of elevation data, including slope and total elevation changes along a route. To address this, PTV Visum 2024 utilizes elevation data from the widely used GeoTIFF format. This allows assigning elevation values to nodes and link vertices; and computing-derived values such as slope or accumulated height gain.

Realistic display of roundabouts in junction editor

The junction editor has been extended to properly display roundabouts. Rendering is based on various attributes like diameter, entry and exit radius for each leg, number of lanes per sector, bypasses, and splitter islands. This visual representation enables efficient inspection of coding accuracy, significantly reducing the time spent on error detection.

WYSIWYG-export to MS Excel

With a simple click, all lists in PTV Visum can now be exported to MS Excel. This user-friendly WYSIWYG export retains column selection, layout settings, sort order, filters, and even includes attribute metadata as comments. Moreover, a new CSV export option generates files tailored for compatibility with other tools, employing default settings for seamless processing.

Extended GIS tools

Geographic data plays a vital role in transport models. To enhance geographic data editing and processing capabilities, PTV Visum now offers an extended set of GIS tools. These include advanced procedures for intersection and disaggregating matrices, as well as graphical tools for splitting territories, such as along shortest paths in the road network.

Vistro merge & update tool

PTV Vistro, a leading traffic engineering tool, focuses on user-friendly interfaces and efficient junction coding. In PTV Visum 2024, a new tool seamlessly merges junction and signal data from multiple Vistro networks into a regional transportation model, incorporating updates as needed. This enhancement simplifies the integration of local Vistro junction details into regional models, avoiding duplicate coding and maximizing data utilization.

Conditional execution of procedures

The procedure sequence is the core of a transportation model. In PTV Visum, different procedures can be combined to create customized workflows. A new option introduces flexible conditions based on model attributes, enabling the toggling of procedure or group execution. This enhances flexibility, reduces the need for scripting and alternative parameter sets, and improves the comprehensibility of the model sequence.

Even faster public transport assignment

Modal shift to public transport and active modes is crucial in transport development plans. Evaluating projects and strategies requires calculating KPIs like travel time and transfers. These calculations can be time-consuming, impacting overall transport model run times. In PTV Visum 2024, the “Shortest Path Search” method for Public Transport Assignment and skimming is significantly enhanced, now running up to 100 times faster. Thus, the method can be a robust and timesaving alternative to the more general ‘Branch and Bound Search’ e.g. for quick skimming in macroscopic models when only travel  times and transfers are considered.

You will complete simulations in record time, reclaiming valuable hours and increasing productivity.

Zipper merging

Multiple additional driving behavior parameters now enable the modeling of specific zipper merging behavior on ramps and adjacent lanes. Vehicles anticipate and synchronize, creating suitable gaps even while a barrier initially  prevents lane changes. This reduces the number of unwanted stops at the end of ramps, resulting in a smoother merging process.

3D vehicle models

In addition to software improvements, we have updated our 3D vehicle models to align with real-world fleet advancements. We have included a significant number of new 3D vehicle models to represent t op-selling vehicles in Europe, USA, China, and Japan. Our selection encompasses vehicles with combustion engines and alternative propulsion systems. While currently focused on motorized vehicles, animated models for bicycles and pedestrians may be added in the future.

Improved labelling of conflict areas

Previously, to define the right of way at conflict areas, we used the numerical references "1” and “2” for the links in the list. Modelers found it hard to know which links these numbers referred to. In PTV Vissim 2024, conflict areas are configured using "A” and “B” as references to the link. For clarity, "A" and "B" are now displayed in the network editor as labels on the respective links. This allows you to directly choose the right configuration without guessing the references.

Multi-route editing

Effortlessly change multiple routes at once by adding temporary intermediate points and moving them across different links. Our network editor offers a real-time preview of the outcome, enabling simultaneous editing of routes derived from various routing decisions. Experience unprecedented efficiency and intuitive customization of routes with our innovative feature!

User-defined pavement markings in 2D and 3D
